SXSW Music Churns Out 8th Artist List

Ho99o9, Questlove, Nothing, and Get Up Kids join the action

Hardcore hip-hop/electronic/punk assailants Ho99o9 return to South by Southwest, as does Roots drummer Questlove, heavy shoegazers Nothing, and Midwestern emo vets the Get Up Kids. The music festival and conference, now just 25 days out, jacks up its roster by 102 ticks with today’s weekly talent drop.

Also adding to the long list of acts showcasing at the March mega event is neo-Nineties urban pop stylist Ace Tee from Germany, synth-pop darlings Zola Jesus, ATL stoner rock quartet Royal Thunder, and NYC’s Cautious Clay, purveyor of smooth and personal alt-R&B, who throws down his own flute parts.

Psychedelic doom groovers Deathchant join the commotion, as does Nashville songwriter to the stars Barry Dean, and a pair of singers also known for their screen work: Mozart in the Jungle co-star and indie-pop singer Lola Kirke, and Hustle in Brooklyn actress Azia Toussain. Brazil’s Boogarins import tropical psych, while Portugal’s Holly wields bass-driven EDM, London Gorillaz collaborator Stylo G puffs modern electro reggae, and Pittsburgh’s Majeure crafts cinematic soundscapes.

Turtlenecked punk-n-roll mysterios Drakulas, led by Riverboat Gamblers singer Mike Wiebe and Rise Against/Hagfish guitarist Zach Blair, lead an Austin list that also includes post-punk slam trio Borzoi and Nineties alt-rock breakouts Sixteen Deluxe. Also sourcing locally: Think No Think, Shy Beast, Ruby Jane, Oliver Rajamani, DJ TradeMark, Duhrdy, Jim-E-O, Katrina Fairlee, Loki, Mluna, and Marcia Ball, who performs with Yvette Landry.
