Riders Against the Storm MC mentors media hopefuls

A local nonprofit facilitating media mentoring, E4 Youth founded the Music Legacy Project, which enables teens to learn about all facets of the music business by working with industry professionals. Program Director Jonathan “Chaka” Mahone, one half of Riders Against the Storm, has been overseeing students in the project, now in its third year.

Blaigne Ayuma

He provides an example of a budding musician taking the opportunity to continue his development: 19-year-old Austin High School graduate Blaigne Ayuma. Accepted into Berklee School of Music, the jazz saxophone prodigy encountered a standard issue – he couldn’t afford tuition.

“How do you stay motivated?” asks Mahone. “These talented young people need mentors, training, development, and resources. That’s where we come in.”

“After high school, I needed help with goal-setting and staying focused,” explains Ayuma. “Having E4 Youth behind me makes a difference. I know that someone has my back, and I can make mistakes without giving up.”

Mahone says Ayuma is preparing an EP release in 2018. His video for “Entering” expresses the aspiring horn man’s desire to enter and establish himself in the music industry.

“I see Blaigne as the future of Austin music,” says Mahone. “Right now, we’re just clearing the space for him to thrive.”

Applications are open at the E4 Youth site for those looking to participate. The deadline is January 5.
