My Education’s Coordinates

By Kevin Curtin, October 24, 2017, 9:30am, Earache!

The epic instrumentals of My Education, compositions of monstrous momentum that traverse space, math, classical, and post-rock airspace, have long been applied to film, re-soundtracking F.W. Murnau’s 1927 silent Sunrise and Mamoru Oshii’s Japanese animé Angel’s Egg.

Today, the veteran Austin sextet sets their propulsive, violin-spiked experimental rock – specifically the track “Coordinates” from last spring’s seventh LP, Schiphol – to a scrappy, lo-fi collage of home movies directed by guitarist Brian Purington. The clip glimpses the work days of My Education: pastoral scenes from the window of a tour van, show set-up, soundcheck, and, ultimately, their possessed performances.

Purington, who now lives in New Zealand, returns to Texas this week for a series of shows. Wednesday finds them at Eastside underground venue the Electric Church with Total Unicorn. Thursday, they’ll be in Ft. Worth with the Angelus and Bulls at M.A.S.S. (Main at South Side). Friday, catch them back home at Spider House for an evening show with the Gary and Honeyrude.
