SXSW Releases Final Artist List

By Kevin Curtin, March 4, 2017, 10:00am, Earache!

Countdown to South by Southwest now trickles down to days, not weeks, so finally the music lineup comes into focus. Enduring enfant terrible Ryan Adams, mumble-rap superstar Lil Yachty, and alt-country queen Neko Case headline a list of 187 artists bringing the fest’s grand total to approximately 1,917 acts.

Make that 1,916, since Told Slant canceled on Thursday. Expect a few more late-breaking headliners before the action starts.

Two homegrown breakouts, Austin guitar god Gary Clark Jr. and psych-rock tribe Black Angels, punctuate a list that also includes ex-Walkmen ascension Hamilton Leithauser, Brooklyn MC Talib Kweli, L.A. trip-hop breakout Banks, gonzo dance rockers !!!, electronic body music duo Youth Code, and quietly local Dead Boys axe man Cheetah Chrome. Also jumping into the mix, DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown, better known as Dallas native Erykah Badu, electronic noise pop act Sleigh Bells, energetic rapper Denzel Curry, industrial noise maestro Pharmakon, Nineties hitmakers Third Eye Blind, Canadian indie rockers Tokyo Police Club, day one hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash, and reformed Texas shoegaze heroes Lift to Experience.

Speed sludge trio American Sharks, songwriter extraordinaire Bob Schneider, and indie rock vets …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead lead a swath of 26 Austin artists who will don “artist” wristbands next week. Other locals in the announcement include Beat Imprint, Bigg John of East 35, Billyracxx, Wacmc da Guttah, DJ Hella Yella, Eyelid Kid, Go DJ JB, Hoodtronics, Keeper, Leather Girls, Mad Classy, Bethany Martin, Mélat, Nimbus, the Resistance, Staci Russell, Sharkweek, and the Wealthy West.
