SXSW Music List Four

By Kevin Curtin, January 19, 2017, 1:15pm, Earache!

Since last fall, South by Southwest has parceled out its 2017 music lineup via sometimes massive lists revealing hundreds of performers. From here on out, the conference will release small batches every Friday. This week’s arrives a day early so as not to compete with tomorrow’s presidential inauguration.

Today’s addition of 144 names, bringing the current running total to some 1,004 acts, welcomes platinum-selling UK songwriter Kate Nash, British jangle-pop raconteur Robyn Hitchcock, and Chicago poet/activist Malcolm London – dubbed the Gil-Scott Heron of this generation by Dr. Cornell West – who’s recent album Opia featured a variety of artists include Donnie Trumpet and Vic Mensa. Also added to the docket, erupting locally March 10-19, are “Redneck Mother” songman Ray Wylie Hubbard, Philly punk/psych/pop trio Purling Hiss, and folker Pegi Young, whose new single “Trying to Live My Life Without You” sniffs of Neil Young divorce material. Her band the Survivors features Muscle Shoals legends Spooner Oldham and Kelvin Holly, Tom Petty/Joe Walsh drummer Phil Jones, and former Drive-By Truckers bassist Shonna Tucker.

Meanwhile, local rock stars Spoon promote their Matador Records return of March 17, Hot Thoughts, with a three-night residency at the former location of classic Red River and Sixth Street music hub Emo’s. They’ve renamed it Eno’s in tribute to their drummer Jim Eno. Spoon and Hubbard lead a cadre of local acts that highlight today’s bulletin.

Rising country/folk singer-songwriter Carson McHone, pop detonators Sweet Spirit, almighty groove-mongers Greyhounds, and pan-Latin songstress Gina Chavez lead a list of 36 Austin acts. Also included are: Ben Aqua, Broken Gold, Curved Light, D.J. Gaines, Dominican Jay, Elijah Ford, Go Fever, Rattletree, Sertified, A. Sinclair, Jonathan Terrell, Eric Tessmer, Wande, and Tank Washington. Two notable former Austinites have been added to the fray, as well: LNS Crew rapper Cory Kendrix (now smokin’ in Denver) and Mirror Travel, currently operating out of New Mexico.
