Second Big SXSW Music List

Increasingly integrated music, film, and technology conference now just 115 days away, South by Southwest unloads another big batch of programming – headlined by the local granddaddy of all festivals' second 2017 Music keynote: Nile Rodgers.

The guitarist/producer, who anchored disco-era mega stars Chic, steps up to the podium Wednesday, March 15, at the Austin Convention Center to give five decades of perspective on the music industry. The New York native produced David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and Madonna’s career-making Like a Virgin in the Eighties – the former famously featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan – the Vaughan Brothers’ Family Style in the Nineties, and has remained transcendent in recent years, collaborating with Avicii, Disclosure, and Daft Punk. That’s his guitar in the latter’s smash “Get Lucky.”

Rodgers adds to a crew of Music Conference keynoters that already includes radio/TV personality and producer Zane Lowe.

This morning’s announcement also adds 206 acts to the SXSW Music roster, which in addition to last month’s list, now counts up to 362 performers – a fraction of the roughly 2,000 artists showcasing March 10-19. Notable names on list No. 2 include New Wave melters Modern English, recently reformed Illinois rap duo the Cool Kids, UK psych tribe Temples, and Philly post-alt-rockers Beach Slang.

As is the case with SXSW’s early announcements, this talent drop pulls heavily from international ranks, giving them ample time to get their passports and travel plans in order. Today’s musical outpouring springs from 26 countries, Greenland hip-hop (Uyarakq x Peand-el x Tarrak) to German classical electronica (Sven Helbig). Australia sends up Sub Pop-signed power-janglers Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Argentina imports indie pop singer-songwriter Tei Shi, Venezuela flies in rap from Apache, as does South Korea with XXX, Israel exports eclectic urban songwriter Noga Erez, and from the musical hotbed of Berlin comes Oum Shatt and their dramatic post-punk surf rock.

Stateside attractions include Sunset, a new project from Braid co-captain Chris Broach, plus Bad Religion frontman/scientist Greg Graffin, sprightly Portland hip-hopper Aminé, Secretly Canadian-approved heavy dream-pop band Cherry Glazerr, California pop intrigue Billie Eilish, and the lyric-driven R&B of Stella – daughter of Latin guitar wizard Carlos Santana.

The conference, founded locally in 1987, adds a dozen Austin artists to the scrum: pop sophisticate Walker Lukens, rising stoner riffers Greenbeard, sitar phemon Indrajit Banerjee, colorful psych-folkers Calliope Musicals, bluegrass burners Wood & Wire, deep lyrical rockers Quiet Company, soulful garage rockers Plantation Band, haunting indie songstress Jess Williamson, Beatlesque cult band Cotton Mather, homegrown reggae lions the Mau Mau Chaplains, gospel powerhouse Shedrach Rowry & the Levites, and grungy noise punk trio Residual Kid.
