SXSW List No. 8

By Kevin Curtin, February 19, 2016, 10:05am, Earache!

South by Southwest’s 2016 artist roster continues to crystallize with this morning’s fresh addition of 127 acts, including Glaswegian electro favorites Chvrches (booked for a DJ set), Minutemen/Stooges bass champion Mike Watt, and Canadian electronic duo MSTRKRFT.

That binge ups SX Music’s total tally of showcasers to roughly 1,686. With just three Fridays separating today and the Conference, we’re on track to hit 2,000 before festivities kick off on March 15.

Masked garage rocker Nobunny, ever-fresh Philly groove guru DJ Jazzy Jeff, and rap/indie mashers The Hood Internet have all been tapped for appearances. So have Baltimore indie rock lovelies Wye Oak, trap producer Swizzymack, veteran Minneapolis rockers Soul Asylum, Kristin Kontrol – aka Dum Dum Girls frontwoman Dee Dee demonstrating her skills as a DJ – and American born, France-based Sub Pop sister act CocoRosie.

Widespread David Bowie tributes continue with Spanish/Argentine raw rock trio Capsula performing their cover LP Dreaming of the Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars in full. Catch the performance at SXSW’s official Music Opening Party at Maggie Mae’s on Tuesday, March 15. Capsula cut its 2013 LP Solar Secrets with Bowie producer Tony Visconti, who’s the first of SXSW 16’s keynote speakers.

Even late in the game, the Fest remains committed to mining local talent. Austinites making the eighth list: Bad Lovers, Bronze Whale, Jesse Dayton, Eric Dingus Presents TSO, Daniel Francis Doyle, Dre Prince, Eve & the Exiles, Ex-Legionnaires, Growl, Ruby Jane & the Reckless, Dominican Jay, Lake of Fire, Rebecca Loebe, Graham Reynolds (performing his chamber opera Pancho Villa From a Safe Distance), the Ripe, Sour Notes, Tetractys, and Tank Washington.
