Following a suffocating set from Brooklyn’s one-woman psych contingent, Idgy Dean, at the site of the original Emo’s – branded the Main – fell to a murmur. Forty-five minutes later, Lolawolf strutted onstage. Technical difficulties, which the band blamed on sound and the sound crew didn’t fix, ate up the buzz created by Dean’s ragged riffs.
If her parents are a taboo subject on the press rounds, it’s unfortunate that Zoe Kravitz’s parentage is written all over her. Her mother, actress Lisa Bonet, dominated her regal features when launching into “What’s Up,” from last year’s debut Calm Down. The wiggle of her hips in high-waist jeans – all Lenny. One rebel braid hung in her eye as she banged a drum with a single drumstick.
Vocals almost completely lost on “AYO,” Jimmy Giannopoulos’ punishing drum machine commanded attention. Pockets of James Levy’s distortion popped off like suds from a shaken beer can. Hitting her vocal stride on unapologetic party anthem “Risky Business,” the singer/actress teetered on well-worn ankle boots to catch the skipping beat.
Just as the bandmates began to gel together on the cramped space, the Festival gears began to turn again. “One more?” asked Kravitz, jerking her head. “No, we’re done.” Futile chants for another song died out before they could make an impact.
Whether they came knowing every word of the LP or were there to sketch out the daughter of stars, those present didn’t hear enough. “She’s playing tomorrow night at Spotify House,” offered one wistful fan.
