SXSW Music: List No. 5

We’ve been poring over the growing list of showcase announcements now arriving weekly from SXSW Music, combing through intriguing unknowns, international curiosities, and veteran favorites playing the conference March 17-22. Today, that talent pool deepens with another 111 artists.

Los Angeles indie-folk favorites Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros stand tall as the most commercially recognizable band in this batch, which brings the current total to 1,251 performers. (Last week’s drop.) Native American activist, environmentalist, and musician John Trudell also slots in.

The new list bulks up SXSW’s ever expanding hip-hop profile. They’ve tapped Midwestern hip-hop collective Doomtree, along with its individual members as solo artists: P.O.S., Dessa, Lazerbeak, Mike Mictlan, Cecil Otter, Sims, and Paper Tiger. Dallas rapper Blue, the Misfit, who played Fun Fun Fun Fest last year, Rhode Island poet B. Dolan, and Canadian iconoclast Buck 65 are also in.

Metalcore/deathcore represents with Norma Jean and Veil of Maya, new-school soul-pop via Kali Uchis (managed locally by ScoreMore’s Claire Bogle), and hail at least one great moniker: Mild High Club.

This fifth cull counts 11 acts from local leagues: Abram Shook, Built by Snow, Guy Forsyth, Jonny Gray, Jess Klein, Joel Laviolette & Rattletree, League of Extraordinary Gz, Marmalakes, Pet White Tiger, S. Dot & Tuk-da-Gat, and the Well.

And as always there’s a wealth of international acts including 11 Canadians, five Australians, and three acts from Trinidad/Tobago – Shurwayne Winchester, Mungal Patasar, Codrington Pan Family – bringing the island sound. We also note an act from Shanghai (Tang Trio) and Sophie Villy of Tbilisi, Georgia, in the former Soviet Union. Reformed North Irish punk band Protex, which played SXSW 2014, returns.
