Wild Bill just can’t catch a break. The mustachioed Austin singer-songwriter goes for the girl at every turn in the new video for the Lost Knobs’ forthcoming single, “She Don’t Say No,” only to see his advances thwarted by a muscleman, pizza guy, and cop.
Lost Knobs vocalist Amanda “Amandolin” Ogden dons a wig, American flag bikini, and some hilariously twitchy facial expressions to steal the show as the trashity object of everyone’s affection. In real life, Amanda and Bill, both Oklahoma natives, have been married for over a decade.
“The whole thing was based on a true story,” jokes Bill.“Never before has a women shoved a hand into a man’s star spangled shorts with so much gusto,” adds Ogden.
The warped Americana tune, reminiscent of Beck’s wilder years, serves as the first focus track on Wild Bill & the Lost Knobs’ debut LP, The Show, out September 20. The album was produced by Meganaut’s Jeff Henson, David Byrne affiliate Jaime Desautels, and Wild Bill himself.
The clip for “She Don’t Say No,” meanwhile, comes directed by local filmmaker/actor Will Martin, whose résumé includes the low-budget action comedy Roughrider, about a deadly skater who takes on drug dealers with his board. Sarah Shurgin and Beverly Barrett worked the cameras and Lost Knobs’ upright bassist Pete “The Heat” Gray acted as the police officer.
“Will Martin is the new Tarantino,” lauded Wild Bill. “He said he’s really looking forward to working together again and hopes that we’ll be able to afford fake blood by then.”
Wild Bill & the Lost Knobs, whose endearingly deranged Christmas musical was the subject of a feature last year, were a four-year fixture at the now-shuttered Flipnotics. These days, the Lost Knobs frequently showcase their comically inclined mixture of country, rock, and folk at ABGB for the Highbilly Happy Hour. On August 8, they screen the video before performing 6:30-8pm.
