Breakout Pummels Cheer Up Charlie’s

Sunday afternoon, punks battled hangovers at Cheer Up Charlie’s for a Chaos in Tejas day show stocked with underground hardcore bands from Texas and Mexico. Those genres aren’t a cake walk in the mid-day sun, but local quartet Breakout, recently announced Black stage performers at Fun Fun Fun Fest, put a packed crowd in a stranglehold.

Tossing off two-minute Molotov cocktails of heavy, unpolished hardcore, the Austin crew proved unrelenting throughout its 30-minute set, the songs coming like blows in a street fight.

Former Creamers frontman Kyle Artrip never touched the stage, marauding the dance floor, pacing anxiously, and striking contorted poses to accent his breathless, Napalm-throated shouts. With the final cymbal hit still ringing, he dropped the mic and walked out the door into the parking lot. Exit stage right.

It’s obvious what lifts Breakout from the hardcore mire: the spitting intensity of punk balanced with the spirited simplicity of Oi!

“We’re a hardcore band,” Atrip explained after the show. “To me, Oi! is just great punk rock. We listen to the early English shit like Sham 69 and Menace, but we’re also drawing from Eighties U.S. punk rock bands like Bad Brains, Reagan Youth, and the Effigies.”

The pulverizing sounds of Breakout can be heard on debut 7-inch Razor Wire, available to download through Bandcamp, though the vinyl version has three extra tracks. Their next 45 lands on Grave Mistake Records in a couple months.
