Ladies Night Out at the Volstead

By Chase Hoffberger, December 3, 2013, 4:27pm, Earache!

Hay laydeez, y’all been working hard and need time to order up some drank and toss around a handful of sass smack-dab in the middle of a dance floor. Thankfully, there’s Ladies Night Out at the Volstead Lounge on Wednesday, a KOOP radio-engineered good time for a good cause that’s sure to get those estrogen levels kicking like a Rockette.

Starting at 8pm, with Linda Maher of Saturday KOOP staple The Clear Spot, the Volstead hosts five, hour-long sets of spun oldies and much more. There’s “outsider music” (The Wildcraft’s Heather Jones, 9pm), plus R&B, house, and soul (Hip-Hop Hooray’s Leah Manners, 10pm; Blended & Brewed’s DJ Hot T, 11pm).

More? How ‘bout some mambo, cumbia, and reggaeton (Beats of Burden’s Vanessa Burden, 12am). These five of KOOP’s 17 female deejays have your number whichever way you slice and dice it. There’s also a whole handbag of other girlie actions and activities like photo booths, vintage vendors, artisan jewelry makers, nail art, and hand writing analyses.

“I wanted to create a night to chill with your homegirls, get your nails did, sip on some cocktails, and dance to some great music,” explains Burden, who organized the event.

Cover’s $5, with all proceeds going towards KOOP, which is exactly how this whole community radio thing should work. Get thyself out to Volstead for a breather. Y’all earned it.
