Green Day Confirms at SXSW

By Raoul Hernandez, February 25, 2013, 11:41am, Earache!

Speculation proved right: Green Day puts in a live appearance at the Moody Theater on Friday, March 15, during South by Southwest. That‘s the same day back-to-back docs on the Bay Area punk trio screen at the Paramount for SXSW Film, Broadway Idiot and Cuatro!

Given the historically rich connection between SXSW Music and SXSW Film, including this year’s keynote speaker for the former, Dave Grohl, bringing his lauded doc Sound City to the Paramount, many guessed Green Day would do the same. By performing at the Moody, they fill the Boss shoes of last year’s festival über headliner Bruce Springsteen, who also loaded in his SXSW “showcase” there.

Last time through Austin, November 2011, Green Day pulled off a surprise show at Red 7. It was loose, light-hearted, and chock full of new songs headed toward the group’s three LPs last year, ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré!. In fact, the description for the Cuatro! doc mentions footage of intimate shows including Austin, so it’s a safe bet the Red 7 gig will see screen time at the Paramount.

“This is the home of rock & roll,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong waved upon exiting Red 7’s outdoor stage in 2011, thanking Austin.

For 10 days in March especially, mos def.
