Live shots of Sorne and Atomic Duo
By Austin Powell, 5:49PM, Wed. Jun. 1, 2011
Confrontational performance art or exorcising musical theater? It’s opposite sides of the same coin for Morgan Sorne, a featured artist at the 2009 Texas Biennial, whose tribal folklore sounds like Antony inhabiting the more esoteric realms of the Mars Volta. Austin Music Weekly captured two pieces of his excellent House of Stone project at Ghost Room.
Sorne, “First Born”
Sorne, “Second Son”
Atomic Duo, “Whitey on the Moon”
Shortly after the recent passing of Gil Scott-Heron, Mark Rubin posted this oddly fitting tribute to the controversial activist/proto-rapper: Atomic Duo’s old-time acoustic take on “Whitey on the Moon,” recorded live at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in May. Expect to read more about Rubin’s many new projects soon in OTR.
Followed by Static, “Cop Gloves”
Local noise-pop outfit Followed by Static is about to release its latest contender for single of the year. This isn’t much of a video, just overdubbed footage of what appears to be a sock hop/talent show at a convalescent home, hijacked from The Voice, but for whatever reason, it works.
