Coralled: Stevie Tombstone
The Eighties made for mighty strange bedfellows, especially after punk rewrote the rules of rock engagement in the late Seventies. You could grow up loving all things country, then reject it for rock & roll, only to find country still in your blood. Just ask Stevie Tombstone, playing tonight at Giddy Ups.

Sonic Pathos & Antipathy: Gregg Turner
While Gregg Turner remains best known for founding late-Seventies L.A. hardcore punks the Angry Samoans, many fans of a certain vintage were also delighted by his wicked writing for Creem Magazine. With new CD Gregg Turner Plays the Hits in tow, he plays the Sahara Lounge Thursday and the White Swan on Friday.

Anarchy in S.A.
For nearly 35 years, I’ve obsessed over the Sex Pistols’ show at Randy’s Rodeo in San Antonio on January 8, 1978. Though I’m not a Sex Pistols collector or even that big a fan, the show peeled back the top of my skull and shotgunned everything I believed about music into smithereens. Did this happen to anyone else? I thought so.

Young Blood & Old Ways
“I’ve played with my band at Antone’s, and I’m originally from Corpus – born and raised.” So begins Devon Allman’s story as standard bearer to the one of rock’s great dynasties. The younger Allman returns to Austin on Wednesday at the Moody Theater with Cyril Neville in the Royal Southern Brotherhood – on the bill with John Hiatt and his father Gregg Allman.

Once a Believer, Always a Believer
2012 marked yet another stellar year for Alejandro Escovedo, who followed up Bruce Springsteen guest spots during South by Southwest with an acclaimed third collaboration with famed producer Tony Visconti in Big Station. Have Yourself a Continental Christmas
’Tis the season, or maybe no reason, but reunion shows seem well-suited to the holidays. What began as a work trip to Lafayette, La., with Chris Gray turned into an all-nighter with our native driver, guitarist C.C. Adcock, who took us nightclubbing with Steve Riley and Dave Egan to Dickie Landry’s badass pad. In my purse the next day was a Don’s cocktail napkin receipt written in Sharpie: “Margaret Moser pitched in $40 for oysters & beer – CC.”

Family Style: Kathy Murray's Blues
In the mid Seventies, about the time Austin’s blues scene began to whip up, I hit the clubs however possible. That’s however, not whenever, because I had no car, only a bicycle, and lived in dread North Austin. Getting to places like Soap Creek out in the hills could be tricky. Among the people I saw in the audience wherever I went was Kathy Murray.

Dangerous Toys Playtime Again
“The line-up is exactly the same as last year, and has been for looooong time!” Jason McMaster throws down the gauntlet for the Dangerous Toys reunion at Red Eyed Fly Saturday. “Mark Geary, drums. Mike Watson, bass. Scott Dalhover, guitar – all original since 1987 – and last, but not least, Paul Lidel on guitar since 1994.” Plus McMaster, natch.
