2012 Was Tops

Gay Place blogger Andy weighs in with individual lists

GLORIA. Pet Shop Boys do the 'Lympics.
GLORIA. Pet Shop Boys do the 'Lympics.

Fierce fierce fierce. Fiercely good and fiercely bad. That was the LGBTQ world in 2012. It was a fire-breather of a year, and because I want to meditate desperately on the fiercely good in hopes that those lovely things carry forth into our baby-fresh year, I'm eschewing a bottom 10 (although I encourage you to read other GPers' bottoms). So let's get to it, ya?

10) Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Washington voted gay-lesbi marriage into the laws of their lands. Look, a step forward is a step forward, and we've gotta give praise to Catholic Vice Prezzie Joe Biden for moving things along in the Obama White House, too. Relatedly: Here's another nice/not-so-nice Catholic moment: Dan Savage and Brian Brown (head of the National Organization for Marriage) sitting at a table and debating it out. It's not as sexy as it sounds, but riveting nonetheless.

9) A better, lither, more proactive Austin Pride. Keep climbin' kittens!

8) All those Queerlympians at the London Gaymes. Remember the story that the influx of Olympians crashed Grindr servers in London? Yeah, that wasn't so true, but a girl can dream. Also: We wish more of the sports ended like this Hot Chip music video. But those opening/closing ceremonies? Gay, gay, gay, as evidenced by the be-plumed Pet Shop Boys riding around on pedicabs manned by orange diamond-heads. Yeah, we checked to see if we'd been drugged, too.

7) Mormons march in Salt Lake City Pride. Anyone who marches in a Pride parade is a brave soul, and worthy of commendation – but I can't imagine marching as a Mormon in the City of Salt Lake. Slow clap.

6) Le1f. Zebra Katz. Frank Ocean. Ab Soto. Perfume Genius. Your favorite mixtape.

5) Poo Poo Platter. Bulimianne Rhapsody, Merci Killingspree, Annie DePressant, Althea Trix, Lady Grackle. Vile vile vile. AND SO GOOOOOOOOD! These abject-ors love a good viscous fluid (blood, egg, whatever). The Poo Invasion is upon us, and we’ll never be the same.

4) Um, this on New Year’s eve via Kathy Griffin. Coops is so auspicious.

3) Gender Identity Disorder now Gender Dysphoria in DSM-5 (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), that manual of pathology. This means, point blank, trans* folks are not diagnosed with a disorder, just for LIVING. The American Psychiatric Association also took a stance on transgender care and civil rights. This is a cultural turning point that shouldn't be under-valued.

2) First openly pansexual (not lesbian, not bi, ya heard!?) legislator in Texas (also nation?) Mary Gonzalez. Our bi- and pan- sistern and bretheren have it rough, as they're often stigmatized by hets and LGs alike. Here's looking forward to Gonzalez's long and bright career. 1) Listen, you know… we ALLLL know… that Rachel Maddow is our boo; she’s made our list a number of times. But it was Melissa Harris-Perry who melted our queer little hearts this year. The Tulane professor has a two-hour weekend show on MSNBC, and besides having some of the best and brightest around her, she plunges headlong into LGBTQ issues in a way that is both deeply informed and enormously respectful. She elevates political conversation. Take, for example: her April show dedicated to “Being Transgender in America”. Sigh!

BONUS ROUND: Just because they’re two of our favorite people: here’s Har-Per (pronounced Hair-Pair) and Angela Davis. Talking. For an HOUR.
