Weekend Wine: News About Texas

The Wines Vines Analytic Winery Database for 2022 was just released and Texas ranks fourth amongst the U.S. states and Canadian provinces. The U.S. currently has 11,691 wineries (!) and Canada has an additional 1,093.

Of the states, California is far and away the largest with 4,973 wineries, with Oregon coming in second (908), Washington third (906), Texas fourth (499), and New York rounding out the top five (453). The three states that generally claim to be number five, apparently incorrectly, are Pennsylvania (393), Virginia (356), and Ohio (329). The Province of British Columbia has Canada’s largest number of wineries with 344, followed closely by Ontario with 306.

When I wrote my first book on Texas wine, The Wine Roads of Texas (Maverick Publishing, 2003), we had 35 wineries. For those with an inclination to minutiae, that reflects a 1,325% increase in 20 years!

Our congratulations to the Texas wine makers and grape growers. You should be very proud of these numbers.
