Seven Gift Ideas for Father’s Day

By Wayne Alan Brenner, June 17, 2020, 3:10pm, On the Range

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, dads gotta eat. Well, yes, everybody has to eat; but a father often seems to do it with more, ah, gusto than most human beings exhibit. God knows why. Maybe it's something to do with the whole psychosocial system that also brings forth those regrettable attempts at humor? You know – dad jokes?

Anyway, here are some gift suggestions for that father of yours (or perhaps some other father you care about), seven suggestions we reckon will do right by his prodigious appetite:

Contigo’s suave AF “Dude” Box ($45) rocks an elegant paterfamilias vibe with Tellicherry honey pepper beef jerky, a maple Old Fashioned kit, smoked allium BBQ sauce, and “The Library” candle from Alaina & Co. Why, this is just the sort of thing we imagine Knives Out’s Benoit Blanc would enjoy …

Buenos Aires Cafe offers a Father's Day Grill Box that's sure to have Dad roleplaying as Supreme Sorcerer of the Meat-Searing Coals. The $80 box includes a 12-ounce ribeye, sausage wheel, two bratwursts, black sausage, provoleta, eight-ounce house chimichurri, chapa bread, potato salad, and of course it all comes with grilling instructions.

LeRoy and Lewis, one of this town’s more recent names in barbecue excellence, rolls out two BBQ Hero packages for Father’s Day. Featuring cuts of Peaceful Pork Whole Hog, Citra Hop sausage, barbacoa and beef cheeks from 44 Farms – and a plethora of sides tasty enough to set your tongue a-quivering – it’s a fine deal that serves 4-6 people ($115) or even a dozen of your nearest and dearest ($240).

Launderette’s got a fantastic Steak Kit available for your favorite papa, with either a two-steak ($78) or a four-steak ($148) pack, and note that those slabs of meaty goodness from 44 Farms arrive “sous vide to medium rare and ready to crisp on the grill or in a cast iron skillet.” Sides, you wonder? Yes: Duchess potatoes, asparagus with piquillo romesco and garlic aioli, and those fluffy pull-apart dinner rolls. Pro tip: Order their chocolate-chip cookie cake ($24) for dessert and make sure you get a few bites in before it’s gone.

Milam & Greene Whiskey’s Bottle-Your-Own Father's Day Experience lets you celebrate with your dad by bottling your own custom bottle of Double Gold award-winning port-finished rye or barrel-proof bourbon at Milam & Greene Distillery out in Blanco. The experience includes thieving whiskey samples from two different barrels, selecting the barrel to bottle, filling your own bottle from the barrel, and hand-labeling that glass vessel of liquid gold yourself. ($100 per person.) Bonus: You can schedule this sort of thing at Milam & Greene even beyond Father’s Day, so maybe jot that knowledge in your scheduling grimoire for future gifting.

Easy's Tiger's "head doughpuncher" David Norman and his son Wyatt team up to present a virtual sourdough baking class. (Order a Bake Along Set for dad – $40, complete with starter, flour, recipes, a loaf of Austin Sourdough, and an Easy Tiger apron – and he'll be set to learn from the maestro himself. Want to bake along with him? Order a second kit for yourself – and use the code FATHERSDAY for $20 off.) But also: the Tiger is also offering a Grill Master Gift Pack ($55) and a Pretzels & Beer Gift Pack ($40), including their full menu of sausages, buns, and sides. Bonus: Stop by the Beer Garden (it's re-opened!) in person on June 21, and your pops will get his first beer free.

Foxtail Supper Club’s chef Page Pressley offers a virtual cooking experience for Father’s Day, cooking alongside his son while teaching participants how to prepare a special seven-dish meal, including red shrimp panzanella, 24-ounce Peeler Farms Wagyu ribeye, summer fruit crisp, and – oh, see the full menu right here. Note: Once the Foxtail box is purchased ($175), you'll be sent an email link 48 hours before the kit arrives with instructions on what needs to be prepared and organized – and you'll have ongoing access to the database where the online cooking tutorial will be posted. Bonus: All Foxtail Supper Club profits from June are being donated to the NAACP.
