Yuyo Closes Permanently
Time to bid a sad chau to Maribel Rivero’s Peruvian restaurant

Okay, that headline is the bad news. But there’s also some good news, something to mitigate the thunderhead with a glint of silver …
Because, yes, that Peruvian place – that excellent Peruvian place, if you trust this review by the Chronicle’s Melanie Haupt – joins many unique Austin restaurants in shuttering permanently, due to consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But Yuyo was originally developed by Carlos Rivero and his sister, chef Maribel Rivero, and the latter’s talent and skill is – ah, it’s why she’s a James Beard Award nominee, right?
So there’s that, FTW.
But, this too: Yuyo was part of the El Chile Group. And while Yuyo is, sadly, gone … Manor Road’s enticing El Chile is reopening for limited dining room and patio service on Mon., June 1, 3pm. And the group’s El Alma venue on Barton Springs Road has already reopened. And, at least for takeout, the three El Chilito locations around town are also doing a brisk business.
Now, we realize a lot of Austinites are all about the Tex-Mex sort of thing – hell, sometimes Chuy’s is where we want to drown in a frozen margarita amid a tableful of cheesy tacos, too – but when you’re craving a real and flavor-forward Mexican experience, well, it’s good to know that the El Chile Group continues to provide some of the best in town.
