Very Texan: Big Swig Sparkling Water Releases New Pickle Flavor and More

By Lina Fisher, July 13, 2019, 7:16am, On the Range

If your body is still recovering from Independence Day/Women’s World Cup celebrations like ours, a booze break is probably in order. Sobriety is trending, and new subscribers are jumping aboard the sparkling water train.

La Croix has long dominated the seltzer scene, but a new calorie-free sparkling drink is in town, and their branding may appeal to those whose Fourth of July patriotism has trickled down into straight-up Lone Star pride.

Big Swig, the self-described "Texas water, made by Texans, available only in Texas," has new flavors bold enough to claim complete originality in the larger market. The maverick flavors released in June are Prickly Pear Cucumber, Watermelon Mint, Chile Mango; just this week, Jalapeño Pineapple and Party Pickle joined the roster. The Austin-based, Austin-sourced company is also the first sparkling water brand to offer 16-oz. cans, so you can sip ‘em slowly at the barbecue, just like tallboys.

If you still want to get your buzz on, Big Swig – “inspired by mixology” – also has cocktail recipes: Party Pickle Martini, Shandy Travis, Bolo Thai, Dirty Ranch Water, Paloma Anderson, and Chile Nelson. The sparkling waters contain natural flavoring and no artificial sweetness, and because the flavors unmistakably evoke Texas summer, they’re great paired with tacos, brisket, burgers, and salads. Or, really, anything you’re eating. As the brand cheekily points out, “our secret ingredient is water – that’s the secret ingredient in you.” www.bigswigwater.com
