Weekend Wine

By Wes Marshall, October 20, 2018, 7:28am, On the Range

Fancy a little Coda di Volpe tonight? Or, how about some Falanghina? Well, we have the solution. We could combine the two grapes and make a wine called “The Tears of Christ.”

The folks at Italian winemaker Feudi di San Gregorio from deep in the heart of Campania have a lovely wine called Lacryma Christi. They make a white version ($16) from the previously mentioned wine grapes as well as a red version ($17) made primarily from Piedirosso and Aglianico. The vibrant acidity and profound stony aromas of the white version make the wine a perfect matchup with any Italian seafood dish. It is also both easier to find and the more tasty of the wines. The chewy, intense red version is a nice match with a thin-crust Neapolitan style pizza.

Feudi di San Gregorio has been around for three decades which means it is a mere slip of a child compared to other wineries in the area, some of which have been under direct family control for up to seven centuries. Despite the winery’s relative youth, they have built a mighty portfolio and I am always happy to find any of their wines on a restaurant wine list. Try a few for yourself and you might agree.
