Kooper Family Rye strikes gold, Liber & Co. wheel and deal, and more afternoon bites.
A few tickets remain unclaimed for tonight’s Women’s Club Wednesday scotch tasting at the W Hotel’s Secret Bar. Jessica Sanders of drink.well and the newly opened Backbeat will lead with sips of Glenfiddich 14 year, Balvenie 12 year, and Monkey Shoulder.
In the past week, seemingly everyone involved in the Austin food and beverage scene has become famous. First up, local bartenders JR Mocanu of VOX Table and Brett Esler of Whisler’s have been tapped as personalities in Reyka Icelandic Vodka’s “Tricks of the Trade” national video campaign. Taping will begin next week.
Like Mary Lou Retton and Major Dhyan Chand, Kooper Family Rye is also is as good as gold. The new(ish) Dripping Springs distillery won a gold medal in the recent San Francisco World Spirits Competition, becoming the fifth Texas whiskey producer to receive the honor and the second to strike gold in the first year of production.
While I was halfheartedly watching RuPaul’s Drag Race last night, I missed two hometown food industry heroes on other channels. Over on CNBC, the cocktail syrup whiz kids at Liber & Co. met with the Billion Dollar Buyer. The Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations premiered their Austin episode last night as well, featuring Veracruz All Natural, Hoover’s Cooking, the Shady Grove, and Franklin Barbecue- natch.
There’s still a chance to catch the Texas edition of Cooking Channel’s Extra Virgin Americana featuring kolache innovator The ZubikHouse with Lexington’s Snow’s BBQ. The episode airs Wednesday, April 6, 8pm.
