In Austin, we are used to our chefs and restaurateurs getting national press, but our outstanding beverage professionals are one of our best-kept secrets. We have a feeling that's about to change.
Imbibe magazine has named two hometown heroes to its Imbibe 75 list of “people, places, and flavors that will shape the way you drink in 2016” – Jessica Sanders of drink.well and the upcoming Backbeat and Bill Norris of Alamo Drafthouse. Former beverage director at qui Rachel DelRocco (now at Houston’s Camerata) also made the cut.
In a statement, Sanders put the honor in context. "Imbibe is arguably the flagship of drinks journalism so its quite an honor to have been included in their 75 list this year,” she says. "I feel privileged to share the pages with people and businesses whose work I study and admire a great deal – particularly those from Texas like Bill Norris and Rachel DelRocco! I’m just so flattered to have been chosen and proud of the work we’ve had the opportunity to do here. Some would say these lists really aren’t that important but I disagree – they speak more about the work being done in Austin overall than they do about anything I’m doing as an individual. Austin’s culinary community is moving at a crazy pace – the pressure is keep up and innovate is really high. Even the ‘best’ of these ‘best of’ lists should just be a reminder that its our responsibility as a city to keep putting out the kind of work and service that will excite people to be drinking and eating in our spaces."
Cheers to all three.
