This Weekend's Can't-Miss Food Events

Blue Bell returns to Brenham, Stinson's adds a second location, and more afternoon food news.

Ohio-based Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams is back in production after their own listeria scare earlier this year and are offering a special four-pack of pints in holiday flavors – buttercup pumpkin with amaretti, salty caramel, sweet cream, and sweet potato pecan praline – available for order via their website. You might also find some of those flavors at local stores such as Royal Blue Grocery, Hyde Park Market, Rosedale Market, the Fresh Plus in Clarksville, and the Sunrise Mini Mart.

In other ice cream news, Blue Bell announced earlier this week that the original Brenham plant is finally back online and many furloughed employees have been called back to work. Still no word on when the full line of ice cream flavors and treats will be available for distribution to local stores, which could mean a Christmas without everyone's favorite peppermint stick ice cream.

Building on the success they've experienced in the Rosedale neighborhood and at Camp Mabry, the proprietors of Stinson's Bistro will open a third central city location in early December on the ground floor of the Longhorn Network building at 3300 N. I-35. Look for the same menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches complemented by coffee and tea beverages, plus a selection of beer, wine, and craft cocktails.

In the spirit of holiday cheer, help ensure that the kids served by Partnerships for Children receive Christmas gifts this year by donating unwrapped toys at Cover 2 as well as both local Cover 3 outlets.

Here are some weekend events you won't want to miss. Modern Spanish restaurant Bullfight will host a futbol fiesta featuring El Clasico – a fierce soccer battle between Spain's two major teams, La Liga's Barcelona and Real Madrid. Doors will open at 10:30am before the 11:15am kick-off time and television screens will be strategically placed on the patio as well as in the dining room. Chef Ryan Shields will offer a selection of classic futbol tapas for sale during the match and drink specials will be featured until 2pm. Reservations recommended. Saturday, Nov. 21, 10:30am.

Hopfields celebrates their fourth anniversary with a day of special tappings of rare draughts all day, games of rare bottle ring toss, raffle giveaways at 3, 6, and 9pm, and food specials such as choucroute garnie and their signature poutine. Saturday, Nov. 21, 11am-closing.

Hops & Grain Brewery hosts a holiday pairing with Austin Daily Press in the tap room where guests can sample some of their signature dishes matched with H&G's favorite beers. Sunday, Nov. 22, 1-3pm.

Drop by Kettle & Brine to learn everything you need to know about infusing cold-brew coffee with seasonal flavors on Coffee Sock Sunday. Representatives of Austin's own Coffee Sock will demonstrate flavor infusions using coffee and equipment available for purchase in the store. Make reservations via email at [email protected] or through the store Facebook page. Sunday, Nov. 22, 2-3pm.

Lenoir co-owner and pastry chef Jessica Maher will present a holiday pie making class at Métier Cook's Supply. The demonstration will cover making the perfect crust as well as traditional holiday filling choices. Participants will also go home with a pie tin. Complimentary coffee and hot chocolate will be served. $45; make reservations online. Saturday, Nov. 21, noon-3pm.

Shop for distinctive stocking stuffers for the chocoholic on your list when Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolates of Dallas presents a holiday pop-up chocolate shop at Métier. Sunday, Nov. 22, 10am-2pm.
