Austin's various celebrations of the French Revolution become more diverse every year. Although Lakeway's Artisan Bistro is not throwing their usual Bastille Day party this year, there are plenty of other places to salute our French compatriots in freedom. Allons mes amis!
Chez Nous (510 Neches) continues their tradition of a special la carte menu for Bastille Day. Tues., July 14, 6-10:30pm
Texas French Bread (2900 Rio Grande) Look for a trio of $7 specials during happy hour - rose', bowls of mussels, and their fabulous frites with aioli. Tues., July 14, 5:30-6:30pm
Vino Vino (4119 Guadalupe)will offer their popular mussels and frites at the bargain price of $7 and bouillabisse for $22. Tues., July 14, 3pm-12am
French Legation (802 San Marcos)
The Alliance Francais d'Austin hosts their 20th annual family-friendly party on the grounds of the former French embassy and current historic museum. There will be live music, games and contests for kids and adults, traditional French food and snacks, French-Vietnamese coffee, wine, and a French-style local beer, as well as ice pops, sodas, and nonalcoholic beverages. Join in the #AFABastille20 selfie contest in front of an Eiffel Tower replica. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, but no outside food or drink will be permitted. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Kids 8 and under get in free. Sat., July 11, 6-10pm.
Justine's Brasserie (4710 E. Fifth)
Austin's hippest brasserie has a special evening of music and spoken word planned. Storm the Bastille with Jello Biafra, Métal Urbain, and more.
Arro (600 W. Sixth)
According to dough puncher David Norman, what Marie Antoinette really said was “Qu'ils mangent de la brioche,” so that's what he'll make for both Arro and Easy Tiger for Bastille Day. Enjoy the brioche as a complement to Arro's special $10 chef's board with charcuterie, French cheeses, and accoutrements or pick up a loaf in the bakery. The restaurant will also offer half priced rosé by the glass and the bottle for the holiday only. Tue., July 14.
Péché (208 W. Fourth)
Enjoy special French menu items such as pork rillettes, leek and bacon quiche, boudin noir, bone marrow and more along with $5 absinthe drinks all night. Tues., July 14, 4pm-close.
laV (1501 E. Seventh)
Stroll in the Jardins de laV to live music from Eighties cover band Thunder Pants and celebrate the holiday with an open bar (21+ of course), passed appetizers from the Say laV trailer from 6-7pm and appetizers, charcuterie, cheese plates, sandwiches, snacks, and desserts for purchase after that. Buy tickets by phone or firstname.lastname@example.org. Guests 12 and older $40 in advance, $50 at the door. Tue., July 14 6-9pm.
Supper Friends at the Swoop House (3012 Gonzales)
Chef Happy Abdelbaki will whip up a multi-course Bastille Day feast for only $55 plus tax & tip. Reservations required. Tue., July 14, 7pm.
In other food holiday news, Food Network Magazine says there's an “unofficial” National French Fry Day and they've named the uniquely delicious French fries at Austin's own Hyde Park Bar & Grill (4206 Duval, 4521 Westgate) to be among the Top 10 in America. In response to that honor, both outlets will be offering half priced fries all day Mon., July 13.
The folks at Roaring Fork (701 Congress Ave., 10850 Stonelake Blvd ) also swear there's something called National Mac & Cheese Day and they plan to celebrate by offering an order of their signature green chile mac & cheese with a margarita for only $5 during happy hour. Tue., July 14, 4-7pm.
