Like you, I grew up in a time when lagers were made by dull people for dull people. Consequently, lagers gained an unreasonably awful reputation as America’s languid, sickly sweet, and embarrassingly light-bodied export, which required several minutes of explanation to our foreign friends in our study abroad programs.
Lately, however, lagers are being stripped of their biting satire status by American craft brewers, and are experiencing a rebirth as an approachable, refreshing beer style replete with all-malt character and actual, premium ingredients. Apart from changing lives by being a terrific consumable during the merciless swelter of Austin’s summertide, craft lagers are creating social mania by being named as “The Official Beer of Austin” and having entire festival dedicated to their contemporary awesomeness.
That’s right, lager festival hopers, stop dreaming because Austin Beer Guide’s Lager Jam 2 is real and it’s approaching.
On June 27 (note the imminent scorch of this calendar date), pole tents will take over the car park at Billy’s on Burnet from 1-5pm to serve you 20 lagers with backbone from 11 Austin-area breweries. Tickets to this event are $25 in advance, and the price includes “a sweet ass pils glass, an on-site screen printed shirt, and three pours of beer," says Chris Troutman, co-founder of Lager Jam and Austin’s eponymous Beer Guide. If planning ahead just isn’t your thing, beer will be available a la carte on the day of the event. Purchase your tickets here.
Here are the beers to expect:
