Let's Taco 'Bout Art

By Virginia B. Wood, June 5, 2015, 12:15pm, On the Range

Tacos are one of the defining culinary icons of our city – we eat them for every meal, engage in heated debates about where to get the best ones, write books about them, even shoot them out of cannons at festivals. Now a talented group of local artists have turned tacos into works of art.

More than 15 local artists have used drawing, painting, and sculpture to create representations of the beloved taco for this month-long exhibition at Jerry's Artarama. Expressionist and mixed media painter Shannon Fannin explains the quirky, contemporary art show this way, “Many of the participating artists show our work in galleries and juried exhibitions and our industry, like music and acting, is very competitive and stressful. We take what we do very seriously, but for this event, we wanted to create a show that was fun and also kept in touch with the Keep Austin Weird concept. We live in a unique place, with amazingly talented people and great food. This show is a celebration of all that.”

For tonight's opening party, the artists themselves are providing light appetizers, sweets, and non-alcoholic drinks and guests are welcome to BYOB. All the artworks are for sale and thanks to the host venue, 100% of sales will go directly to the artists in the show. After tonight's opening party, the show runs until the end of June. Look at it this way, it's a chance to pick up tacos that will last a lifetime.
