Austin-Area Chipotle Grills Raise Funds for Urban Roots

Educational fields trips supported by Feb. 6 donations

All Austin-area Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants will come together this Thursday, February 6 to donate proceeds – up to $15,000 – to Urban Roots' Field Trips to the Farm initiative.

Urban Roots conducts farm tours for groups of students from elementary and middle schools with educational activities that teach about sustainable farming, making healthy food choices, and, in general, where our food comes from. The tours, of course, include the opportunity to taste veggies fresh from the garden located at 7651 Delwau Lane in East Austin.

“Chipotle's support of youth-led field trips on our 3.5 acre farm not only provides Urban Roots youth interns with opportunities to cultivate their leadership and public speaking skills, but it also gives 600 middle and elementary school students the chance to learn where their food comes from," said Urban Roots Executive Director, Max Elliott.

Chipolte’s website is chock full of information on the company's committment to offering organic produce, buying hormone-free meats, and supporting local farms; the relationship with Urban Roots seems a natural fit. So, if a build-your-own burrito was in your eating plan for the week (or even if it wasn’t), Thursday is the day to get a group together and head to a Chipotle store. There are 16 local outlets from which to choose.

"It is so inspiring to see the look on a child's face when they eat some cilantro or a cherry tomato straight from the fields for the very first time,” says Elliot. “These food experiences will stay with them for a long time and will help shape the way that they think about food.”
