The ABGB Makes It Better

Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. opens for business Aug. 30

After a series of soft opening previews, Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co. (1305 W. Oltorf St.) is set to open this Friday at 3pm. While the brewpub has ample patron parking, it’s a safe bet that the lot will be packed, as it should be.

The brainchild of Amos Lowe and Brian “Swifty” Peters, the unpretentious and casual beer garden (go ahead and call it “the ABGB”) is decidedly straightforward. The menu is simple: 10 homebrews on tap and thin-crust pizzas and sandwiches. With produce provided by Johnson’s Backyard Garden and proteins from Salt & Time Butcher Shop, the emphasis on local and sustainable is palpable. Find a designated driver, and throw back a 7.9% Big Mama Red. Or, go with the epitome of an Austin pale ale: the light bodied and deliciously hopped Day Trip. The beers at the ABGB are absurdly drinkable; in fact, the Oktoberfest in the heat of August was a welcome reprieve.

Though the winning space (on an ambitious two acres) is still undergoing minor renovations, the ABGB’s beer offerings are already refined, undoubtedly ready to thrive in the belly of South Austin.
