What could be more exciting for a small business owner than an invitation to pitch their product on national TV? Tiny Pies owners Kit Seay and Amanda Bates flew to New York earlier this week to shoot a segment where Mom entrepreneurs got the opportunity to pitch their products to Katie Couric and some real life experts.

"It was sort of a mini-Shark Tank, but more low key," Kit Seay told me yesterday, referring to the ABC program where entrepreneurs pitch their companies to high-powered investors. In addition to host Couric, the experts were handbag and apparel designer Rebecca Minkoff, and Sara Blakely, founder of Spanx.

"We gave the judges a brief overview of our business model and the concept behind Tiny Pies and discussed our future goal of opening store fronts across the state of Texas. The judges tasted our product during the show and each audience member went home with one of our Teeny Tiny Sweet Texas Pecan Pies," said Amanda Bates.

"One of the coolest things that happened while were there was that Helen Mirren was also a guest on the show and she sent someone to our dressing room to request a pie, so we sent two," Kit said with obvious pride.

For those who have yet to have the Tiny Pies experience, the mother/daughter team broke into the local pie scene in 2011 with a busy booth at the Barton Creek Farmers' Market. They no longer sell at the farmers' market, but Tiny Pies are now available at both Central Markets, Wheatsville Co-op, Thom's Market, Royal Blue Grocery on Nueces, Fresh Plus in Allandale, and by delivery through Coterie Market and Greenling, in addition to select stores in Houston, San Antonio, and the Metroplex area.

"Participating on the show was a fantastic experience and we hope the attention it brings will help us find an investor to help us reach the next level," said Amanda. Look for Kit and Amanda pitching Tiny Pies on Katie on ABC, Friday afternoon, July 19 at 2pm CDT.
