October 26 Is Official Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day

By Virginia B. Wood, October 25, 2012, 5:00pm, On the Range

Dallas publicist and seventh generation Texan Jeffrey Yarbrough worked to have October 26 designated as Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day and a resolution to that effect was signed on May 30, 2011. Hoover's Cooking is the first Austin restaurant to recognize the tasty new holiday.

The first Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day was celebrated last year at Dallas home cooking institution Norma's Cafe and this year owner Ed Murph has added a tasty twist to the festivities by offering a selection of five chicken fried steak platters that represent the different tastes across the Lone Star State: the Classic with cream gravy; the San Jacinto with chili, Cheddar cheese, jalapenos, and onions; the Panhandle with cream gravy, green chilies, and Jack cheese; the Hill Country with brisket and barbecue sauce; and the By the Border with a chicken fried steak enchilada, rice, beans, and pico de gallo.

Restaurants all over the state have jumped on the celebration band wagon this year. Here is town, Hoover's Cooking (2002 Manor Road) is serving up their award-winning chicken fried steak garnished with some of the mouthwatering Tex-Mexi-que brisket and house recipe sausage served at both the restaurant and the Soular Food Trailer (1110 East 12th).

Up in Marble Falls, the Bluebonnet Cafe (211 Hwy 281 N.) serves up chicken fried steak smothered in peppery cream gravy every day. Just remember to save room for pie!
