Local Food Companies Win Awards

By Virginia B. Wood, September 20, 2012, 12:36am, On the Range

Two Central Texas artisan food makers have recently garnered national awards recognition. Both Austin Slow Burn and Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods have good reason to be proud of their accomplishments.

Jill and Kevin Lewis of Austin Slow Burn have good reason to be partial to the the annual Houston Hot Sauce Festival because they always return from the Bayou City loaded down with trophies. This year, their Jerk Marinade won first place for the 8th year in a row and their Green Chile Con Queso scored a first place win for the 5th time! They also placed third with both their Green Chile Salsa Fresca and Salsa Verde. "There was some excellent competition this year, from bottlers all over the country and beyond. Repeatedly winning 1st place is something that makes us proud," co-owner Kevin Lewis said. Around Austin, look for Austin Slow Burn products in Central Markets, select Whole Foods stores, Royal Blue Grocery, Spec's, Farm to Market, 263 Grill & Provisions, select HEB's, Thom's Market, and Spicewood General Store.

Every year, the editors and dieticians at Cooking Light magazine choose the healthiest and best-tasting grocery store products from among 200 finalists for their Taste Test Awards, also known as "The Tasties." After blind taste tests, this year's award for Best Frozen Vegetable Lasagna went to Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods, a locally-owned and family-operated frozen food company.
