Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival Returns to Austin for Year 16
The ink and creativity flow this weekend, Jan. 26-28
January 22, 2018
Whether you're trying to finish that arm sleeve with a perfect flourish on your wrist, or you fantasize about going under the needle for your first tattoo (just stay away from the lower back), Star of Texas Tattoo Art Revival provides a welcoming atmosphere for the novice and expert alike.
Sure, you can throw a rock and hit many a first-rate tattoo parlor in town (at least you can from the Chronicle offices, anyway), but SoT goes out of its way to bring in international artists and curate an inclusive esprit de corps.
The convention takes place Fri.-Sun., Jan. 26-28, at the Palmer Events Center. Tickets are $25 for a day pass and $60 for the weekend (discounted tickets available online). In addition to flying in various tattoo cognoscenti from places near and far, the weekend event has tattoo contests to show off your stuff, an art gallery to figure out your next piece, and unique vendors selling all manner of sundries (it’s never too early for grandma’s Christmas present).
There’s plenty of entertainment provided by local burlesque divas The Jigglewatts, belly dancing authority Michelle Manx, and drag show The Divas of Illusion. But more importantly, Star of Texas brings in artists and fans from around the world to celebrate this ever-evolving art form.
The venue is designed to provide a comfortable space where people thinking of getting a tattoo can preview a diversity of styles: photo-realistic, black and gray, portraits, Japanese-inspired, and plenty of everything in between. Please let us know who had the coolest Rick & Morty tattoo.
