Pet Evac: What You Should Know

As you load LaMont and Ling-Ling in the Dodge Caravan, know that you are doing the right thing, since, as FEMA points out on their page for pet owners, if you should evacuate your home, never leave your pets behind. Instead take a moment to review the information/links below before making your plans. The FEMA site has a variety of "Cusomer Gateways" for specific targeted audiences – for example, business, individuals with special needs, kids, livestock owners, etc. – with helpful links on what to do before, during, and after a natural disaster.

The Austin Humane Society, who, as of 4:30pm today, reports already sheltering 7 dogs, 2 cats, one hamster, and a rat, has activated Emergency Pet Sheltering Services to assist with Hurricane Ike mandatory evacuations.

An important note from AHS: The Humane Society will not be accepting animals directly from evacuees. Evacuees must be registered and must be staying at a City of Austin Emergency Evacuation Shelter in order for AHS to house their animals. COA Animal Control will remain on site at the shelters and will provide transportation for the pets from there to AHS.

Also check out their list of dog-friendly hotels. And it is always appropriate to note that the Humane Society is Austin's only non-profit, no-kill adoption shelter. Check them out when it's time to add to your household.

Locals, too, should exercise caution: This storm may bring us some days without power and possible flash flooding. As we all adjust to the idea of routine prevention, the Texas State Animal Resource Team ("Empowering Texans") provides great resources and information:

"Prepare Your Family (and Animals, too!). Develop your emergency plans and disaster kits before the emergency happens! Plans and kits are effective ways to protect your family, animals, property, and business."
