Another Reason to Get Out: AIA Homes Tour

By Anne Harris, November 1, 2013, 11:33pm, Chronique

Home tours abound in Austin, between the neighborhood associations and historical societies such as Preservation Austin, you can find a self-guided hike about as easily as you can live music. But as we all know, for serious followers of local architecture, the annual AIA Homes Tour really delivers.

This year, you are invited to examine eleven new and renovated homes across the Austin area that celebrate diverse design. Homes range from six dramatic renovations to new construction of modern dwellings. The homes were selected from thirty submissions received in March of this year. Criteria for selection is based on design excellence, uniqueness of the project, diversity, location, and quality of construction. Examples of homes on the tour include a 1932 Greek Revival cottage, a Westlake estate with multiple outdoor living spaces filled with light and water, and a Bauhaus-inspired home with living spaces that are visually connected by a courtyard. Many of the homes are modern in design, featuring linear kitchens and compact, useful spaces.

Privately, whether or not we are architects, engineers, or decorators, we all love to get inside other people's houses, admit it. Besides, the weather demands that you do just that. About 5000 other curious fans of local architecture probably will, so don't be left out of the conversation on Monday morning.
