UT's 'The Project' Offers Free Home Repair

By Sarah Marloff, November 25, 2013, 1:55pm, Chronolog

For a limited time, UT’s annual day of community service, The Project, seeks Eastside homeowners in need of work and repairs around the house. The deadline is this Wednesday.

You may be eligible (or may know someone who might qualify) for this free assistance. Tasks will range from simple to intricate home repairs, garden and landscape assistance, interior and exterior painting, and trash removal.

The boundaries for eligibility are: I-35 to Pleasant Valley, and E. Seventh to Lady Bird Lake. Applications to qualify for assistance from the group have been available for a while, but the event has just come to our attention: The deadline to submit a job site proposal is this Wednesday, November 27.

The Project once again offers assistance to Eastside residents this February. With over 2,000 students, "The Project" is the biggest day of its kind here in Austin. Yet, this year, the job requests have been scarce. For the promise of 2,000 students giving their time to repair homes, the applications have only trickled in. They have the potential to help many, many more residents.

UT's day of service will send more than 2,000 university student volunteers into the community with the goal of improving Austin public spaces and assisting those who otherwise cannot get necessary home projects completed. The project itself happens February 22, 2014.

According to activist Lori Renteria, an East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood volunteer, “The students will assess the residences we request and will work directly with the residents.” As for public spaces, Renteria says that “Requests can be made of the UT workers for any improvements to public spaces or right of ways – like sidewalks and alleys - and the students will work with the various governmental departments to work out the details and approvals.”

Renteria has also reached out for more community volunteers to assist the students' organizing committee. The group meets once a month at Martin Middle School. For more information, contact UT Student, Juana Tamayo at
