StoryCorps Returning to Austin

The little Airstream trailer with the recording studio inside is on its way back to the Bullock Texas State History Museum, where it'll be parked for a month to collect more personal tales of Central Texans of all stripes. Yes, the StoryCorps MobileBooth returns to Austin Jan. 5, and you can reserve a spot to record your story starting today.

Maybe you'd like to tell the story of how you came to be in Austin or how being here has changed your life. Maybe you'd like to tell a story about the most important person you've known since you've lived here – a parent, a teacher, the love of your life. Maybe you'd like to tell a story about what happened to you on one of those days that made history in Austin (the Memorial Day flood, Stevie Ray's death, the Wendy Davis filibuster). Whatever story you want to share, StoryCorps wants to hear.

The national nonprofit will give you and someone you know a 40-minute interview session in which to record your story. (A trained facilitator will be on hand to guide you through the interview process.) After you've finished, StoryCorps will give you a free copy of the recording and, as it has with the stories of more than 80,000 Americans in the 11 years that it's has been preserving and sharing peoples' personal histories, send another copy to be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

To reserve a slot during StoryCorps' Austin stay, you can either call StoryCorps’ 24-hour toll-free reservation line at 800/850-4406 or visit www.storycorps.org. Additional appointments will be available on Jan. 7. Please note that although StoryCorps operates as a free public service, it suggests a donation of $25 or more for each interview to help offset operating costs. But anyone who can't afford to make a donation may still participate at no cost.

Snippets of StoryCorps interviews are regularly featured on the NPR program Morning Edition, so it makes sense that KUT 90.5, the local NPR affiliate, is responsible for the MobileBooth's return.
