Every comic fan knows to put the first Saturday in May on their calendar, because it's Free Comic Book Day. No, really. Today is the day that comic stores around the world will be giving away 45 specially printed titles, from big name publishers and the best of the indies, and all you have to do is visit your local comic store.

All you have to do is visit your local store and pick up some free comics. No, this is not a test or a trick. It's just a great way to sample some of the finest titles on the market today for free. Really.

FCDB is almost a national holiday for comic stores, so a lot of them will be adding extra entertainment just for the day. Here's a full list of all the local shops that are taking part, as well as any special events that they have posted so far.

As always, Free Comic Book Day runs the gamut from hardcore cult indie (The Censored Howard Cruse) to exactly the kind of all-ages material that gets kids excited about comics (Moomin Color Special.) Obviously with a little film called The Avengers in cinemas this weekend, expect the Age of Ultron issue from Marvel's mightiest heroes to assemble right off the shelves. That said, the really hot item may be from Archaia, who have really outdone themselves: Not only does Mouse Guard, Labyrinth & Other Stories feature six short stories from their best titles, but this is a hardback edition. No, really. If you can't get off your couch for a beautiful, four-color hard cover, then what kind of fan are you?

Seriously, the titles on offer provide perfect jumping on points, containing either a first issue, an opening chapter, or even a self-contained story of what could be your new favorite books.
