In its annual effort to get Austinites on the same page, the Austin Public Library Friends Foundation announced today its 2012 Mayor’s Book Club pick, Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones.

Winner of the 2011 National Book Award winner for fiction, Salvage the Bones follows a 14-year-old girl named Esch, newly pregnant and obsessed with Greek mythology, in Gulf Coast country on the eve of Hurricane Katrina. The New York Times called it a “taut, wily novel, smartly plotted and voluptuously written.”

Mayor Lee Leffingwell will introduce Jesmyn Ward at a free event on Saturday, March 31, 1pm at the Downtown Faulk Library (800 Guadalupe). Ward will read from the book as well as take part in a Q&A. Book discussions will happen in April at various library branches around town with UT prof Dr. Helene Woodard and author Amanda Eyre Ward, and the Carver Library will host a screening of Katrina doc Trouble the Water on April 26.
