The Austin Chronicle

A Novel Idea

The New York Times reported yesterday that J.J. Abrams, filmmaker (Star Trek) and television innovator (Lost), has tapped Austin author Doug Dorst (Alive in Necropolis) to write a new novel.

Said the Times' Arts Beat blog:

The publisher Little, Brown said on Wednesday that it had acquired a book that Mr. Abrams, the director of “Star Trek” and a creator of the television series “Lost,” “Alias” and “Felicity,” had conceived and will be written by Doug Dorst, the author of the supernatural crime novel “Alive in Necropolis.” … Just what that project is neither Mr. Abrams nor Little, Brown is indicating, except to say that it is planned for a fall 2012 release on the Mulholland Books imprint.

The Chronicle didn't have any better luck getting hard facts about the collaboration; a Little, Brown rep politely sidestepped our advances, saying only that "all the plans are under wraps for now." Color us intrigued.

Dorst's most recent book is The Surf Guru, which the Chron named one of 2010's best books, calling it "wildly whizzing and very finely written."
