Esther’s Follies to Hold Auditions for New Performers

By Wayne Alan Brenner, June 15, 2022, 1:45pm, All Over Creation

Can you do a great Joe Biden? Dance as a giant dildo? Want to be a comedy star – or at least occasionally be recognized when shopping at Costco?

Esther's Follies on Sixth Street, Austin's premiere comedy and magic theater since 1977, is holding auditions for male performers with comedy, musical, stage, and (at least some) dance experience. (Comedy sketch and comedy songwriters are also needed.)

The Esther's Follies show combines short comedy sketches, monologues, musical production numbers, and magic illusions. Political satire comes up often in the show, as they parody the news and cultural events.

Note: All actors are paid, depending on experience, to start with at least $600 per week. Showtimes are Thursdays at 8pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 & 10pm.

Show rehearsals are Tuesdays and Wednesdays every week, noon-3pm, and before shows on Thursdays and Fridays, 6-7 pm. (Yes, you’ll need to attend rehearsals to be in the shows.) To audition in the first place, prepare a five-minute piece that presents your comedy creativity and variety of characters – and be ready to learn a dance routine to show your flexibility. Actors should also prepare a short song – it doesn’t have to be comedic – to be sung acapella (or with your own tape on the Esther’s sound system) to show vocal capabilities.

Auditions will be held Tue.-Wed., June 21st & 22nd from 2:30-4 pm, or by appointment. Send resume and reels to [email protected] and to [email protected]. You can also call 512/320-0198 (Mon.-Fri.,10am-3pm) for details or to schedule an audition time.
