Coldtowne Brings Sex a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs to the Austin Stage

Comedy written by the off-center minds behind Wet Hot American Summer

From NYU to the big screen and now to the Austin stage, comedy multihyphenates Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Showalter, and David Wain continue to leave laughing (and sometimes confused) faces in their wake.

Best known for Wet Hot American Summer, the trio has a growing number of on- and under-the-radar productions to their names. One of the earliest and rarest ones – Sex a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs – is coming to ColdTowne Theater starting Feb. 15.

Sex tells the story of Jack Greenberg (played in Austin’s production by Yamina Khouane), the new sheriff in Teaneck, N.J., who is on a crusade to prohibit the troublesome criminal and businessman Tad Theaterman (Kyle Irion) from peddling smut. If only it weren't so damn profitable.

Things only get weirder from there with love, money, song, dance, banana phones, and, of course, the titular wieners and boobs getting some stage time. Fans of MTV’s The State, comedy troupe Stella, or any of the many projects that include all or some of the Lo Truglio/Showalter/Wain triumvirate will recognize the unique brand of hard-to-predict humor. The director of the local production, Kyle Romero, says the show is “like Loony Tunes, but hornier.”

Although Wieners and Boobs is an older work from the trio (the first staging dates back to 1998 or so), ColdTowne has put its own twists on the production. Romero tweaked the decades-old original through casting and directing choices to shake up the show a bit.

“Making a woman of color get the lead, which was originally played by a white guy, is already a step in that direction of being modernized,” says Khouane.

However, Sex a.k.a Wieners and Boobs doesn't take itself seriously or attempt to address social justice or political issues. Laughter is the goal. Anything else would miss the whole silly point.

Sex a.k.a. Wieners and Boobs runs Saturdays, Feb. 15-March 21 at ColdTowne Theater, 4803 Airport. Tickets are $18 ($15 advance).
