Brené Brown and the Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation are teaming up to bring the New York Times bestselling author back to her alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin. Tickets for Daring Athletes: Embracing Courageous Leadership in the Age of Toughness, A Conversation With Brené Brown are on sale now.

An extremely limited number of tickets are available to the public for $45. All others will be offered for $10 to current UT-Austin students, faculty, and staff. The talk will be held in Hogg Auditorium on campus, Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Like her inspiring TED Talks and Netflix special, Brown encourages audiences to be open to all feelings, even the emotions no one likes. The focus for this particular speaking engagement will be on student athletes and how they can be their truest selves in a community that thrives on “toughness.”

“CSLi is honored and excited to bring Dr. Brown back to her alma mater,” said center founder and executive director Daron K. Roberts in a press release. “I believe our discussion will help shift the conversation around leadership in sports.”

A native of San Antonio, Brown moved around the South before attending UT, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work. She went on to earn her Doctorate from the University of Houston and currently works there as a research professor.

Living life with her eye on other peoples’ happiness as well as her own, the now Houstonian takes “courage over comfort” and believes that to get through the tough times, you just have to roll with the punches. Being open and empathetic toward others is a common emphasis in her writing and talks.

“Joy is vulnerable,” reads a downloadable quote on her website. “That’s why we’re afraid to let ourselves feel it. Don’t squander joyful moments by waiting for the other shoe to drop. Lean in and practice gratitude.” And while it can sometimes sound trite, maybe hearing it in person will be just the kick in the pants you need to put it into practice.

Tickets are likely to go quickly, so cross your fingers and click here to see if any are still available.
