How About Some Music a Little out of the Ordinary This Weekend?

By Wayne Alan Brenner, August 25, 2016, 9:00am, All Over Creation

Classical?
Some of it.

Rockin’?
Some of it.

Edge, as they say, cutting?
Some of it.

Mostly as serious as it is beautiful, maybe a skoshie silly because Austin, one entire event in a venue galvanized by kinetically digital art: There are several nights of music in addition to the sort of damned good stuff that this town already serves up night after night in so many clubs, and we’re gonna point it out to you here.

1) Friday’s got your Loop Mass, with the likes of Justin Sherburn, Matt Steinke, Kyle Evans, and Zac Traeger playing original compositions among the looped videos from more than 50 visual provocateurs from the Austin Museum of Digital Art.

2) Friday’s also glorified by the Beerthoven series at Saengerrunde Hall, featuring the transcendent voices of One Ounce Opera and guitarist Celil Refik Kaya and their renditions of Renaissance songs by Dowland and Morley and more among the heady brews.

3) Saturday’s got those traditionalists of La Follia going all zoophilic with their “Animal House” concert, featuring music celebrating our non-human fellow Earthlings. And that Robert Faires narrating the wedding of Babar and Celeste!

4) And Sunday? Sunday is the second birthday party for Local Artists Local Opera, where they’ll unleash their fiercest and most dulcet tones among a flotilla of cupcakes at the North Door.

[And that’s the weekend. But the Law of Fives says there’s always gotta be five things, right? Thus:]

5) Monday night’s another choice, with Me Mer Mo’s weekly infusion of glitch-glammed experimentalism and finest noise at the Volstead … and Graham Reynolds & the Golden Arm Trio giving the crowd ear-rocking whatfers as their annual Dive Bar residency comes to a close.

HAIL ERIS!
