Day of the Dead at the ESB-MACC

By Robert Faires, October 31, 2014, 10:00am, All Over Creation

Hard to believe that it's almost a year since we lost Austin's patron saint of printmaking, Sam Coronado. He died from complications following a stroke on Nov. 11, 2013, which means this will be the first Dia de los Muertos following his death. It's an ideal opportunity to remember this Austin Arts Hall of Famer, and rest assured, he will be.

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center – for which the Day of the Dead is the biggest celebration of the year – is honoring Coronado with a showing of his – what else? – prints with a Dia de los Muertos theme in the Community Gallery. With them will be an altar in his memory designed by Mary Jane Garza, an artist who also wrote a fine profile of Coronado for the Chronicle back in 1998.

The gallery will be open throughout the celebration, which lasts from 2-10pm this Saturday, Nov. 1. Before you pay a visit to the ESB-MACC and join the celebration, if you want to learn a little more about the late artist, his many contributions to the arts in Austin, and the honors bestowed upon him for his services, you can find an abundance in these pages.

Other Day of the Dead offerings at the ESB-MACC include an artists market that opens at 2pm, with handmade crafts by Latino artisans, as well as a Paseo de Artes with information from local art organizations. The public will have an opportunity to make altars for loved ones and can compete in a costume contest. There will also be a car and bike show with prizes, dance performances, and, of course, music.
