The Gender Unbound Art Fest will spotlight the work of trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming artists and musicians

By Sarah Marloff, September 23, 2016, Columns

"Too often, stories of trans and intersex people are centered around our bodies, bathrooms, victimhood, surgeries, and transitions," says Gender Portraits artist and nonprofit founder Drew Riley. Instead of focusing on the negative, Saturday's Gender Unbound Art Fest will spotlight the work of trans, intersex, and gender nonconforming artists and musicians. This evening mini-festival is a celebration and "declaration of the vibrant talents that reside in [these] communities." Brooklyn's KC Crow Maddux will have his art on display as will New Hampshire's Catherine Graffam, who will also speak during the fest. The 10 additional artists were chosen from an open call, and the lineup is stellar. Local queer bands, including Brand New Key and Pillow Princess, round out the sound while ASA offers free HIV testing on-site. "It's my hope that having trans and intersex people working side by side in an event like this will help build stronger bridges between our communities," says Riley. "And make us better allies to each other for both our benefit."
