Gay Place: Seal '14 With a Kiss

By Kate X Messer, January 2, 2015, Columns

Happy New Queer, you. Thank you for reading. We luv u.

TOP NATIONAL GAY 10 of 2014

1) IT'S A TRANS, TRANS, TRANS, TRANS, WORLD No jokes, no games, only one punny (albeit James Brown-derivative) headline. Plain and simple, this was a year when transfolks got much needed attention (hopefully, along with their allies, instigating collective cultural action).

2) PRESIDENT OBAMA banned workplace discrimination by federal contractors. Werq!

3) LAVERNE COX made history (again), this time as the first Emmy-nominated out transwoman (Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Netflix's Orange Is the New Black).

4) SCOTUS more than doubled the states with marriage equality (Texas, your time will come ...).

5) BOYCHILD in W magazine. Fullstop.

6) POPE FRANCIS kind of, sort of, got the Vatican to acknowledge that we're pretty good at stuff.

7) MICHAEL SAM Out, gay national sports figures FTW.

8) BLM made a stand for trans solidarity – not like Black Lives Matter's plate wasn't full enough in 2014.

9) ANDREW RANNELLS Dandy derring-do from Girls to Hedwig and back again.

10) DOLLY PARTON stood up for queer fans and called out homophobic Christians.

3) GAY MARRIAGE GLADIATORS Nicole Dimetman & Cleopatra De Leon take marriage equality to the 5th Circuit.

4) GREG ABBINK Congrats, APD's first out trans officer.

5) GENDER-NEUTRAL RESTROOMS and 100% HRC MEI Austin's inclusive track is on the right side of history.

6) PETTICOAT FAIR's customer service gaffe with a trans client resolves in peace and understanding.

BOTTOM GAY 10 of 2014

1) NO HATE CRIME DESIGNATION Downtown attack that leveled gay slurs and solid, bone-breaking punches earns noodle slap and 10 years' probation.

2) HOBBY LOBBY won for businesses the right to discriminate as they please.

3) THE TEXAS LEGE is already thinking about gross ways they can expand these discrimination rights.

4) THE AUSTIN INSTITUTE and MARK REGNERUS really like getting up in our hizzy. The lady doth protest too much ....

5) JIMMY FLANNIGAN'S LOSS Let's assess our role.

6) PINE STREET STATION closes after good faith negotiations with Cap Metro turn out to be not so good.

7) WENDY DAVIS' LOSS Still hurting from the November elections? Abbott hasn't even taken office yet.

8) GAY PANIC pushback from Fourth Street neighbors against RAINBOW CROSSWALKS.

10) AUSTIN'S CALL-OUT CULTURE KIDS' beef with QueerBomb and GayBiGayGay.
