Of Oscar and schlucking

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY OK, that was a crappy movie, and this isn't even about football, but on any given Lord's day in the gAyTX, there is a butt-ton of stuff going on. You know this. Most of you already have your Sunday routines carved out: Maybe it's brunch. A gospel brunch? After church? Maybe it's a long-ass bike ride? Sprawling out across the Hill Country on your road rager? Exploring some Eastside markets or trailers on your cruiser? Maybe it's staying in bed with your sweetie? Or sweeties? Or FWBs? Maybe it's catching up on The New York Times or a juicy novel? Maybe it's saving up your energy to head out to the clubs around dinnertime for one last blast before the work week begins? Well, this weekend is soooo ghey. It is Oscar week! The Academy Awards are broadcast this Sunday, and two local nonprofits are throwing events in celebration. Our LGBT film fest, aGLIFF hosts its big-ticket event at the Driskill (not at Austin Studios as promoted for months ... but hey, no complaints here – the Driskill is stunning). Our long-time pal Kitty Murray, she of lez social group Foodies fame (that is how we met) is being honored, along with Scott Landry. Out Youth's Academy Awards party is across town at Oilcan Harry's. Both events should raise some serious scratch for some seriously great groups. Consider, if you will, donning an early Hollywood theme in your coutural contrivances, as later that evening you can get a wiggle on to the second installment of Miss Angel (Gadjo Disko) and Miss Amelia's fabulous new 1920s cabaret night, Vintage Vivant. This month's leitmotif, Gangsters + Molls. (See Sunday.)

SCHLUCK LIKE YOU MEAN IT We'll hassle you about this a bit more in the future, but for now, we humbly ask that you consider picking a weekday and putting at least one happy hour at Cheer Up Charlie's on your calendar. We, in the form of DJ kATX, shall spin a nifty set of blue metal-flecked wheels, vinyl-only, for your chillaxxing and ass-maxxxin', post-workday, post-school-day downtime, to schluck a few down before heading home to last week's pasta and unintentionally wilted spinach. And for those, like us, who are not so alco-rific these days, there's plenty o' kombucha and non-drunky drinkies to swirl, sip, and swallow. Oh, and one more thing for your radar, if we might? If you are "doing" South by Southwest (ahem), keep an eye peeled for info on the upcoming LGBT Meet Up hosted by yours truly. More later.

The Gay Place loves you; keep those cards and letters comin’.
