The Gay Place hosts a Fagnetic Fields party!

STRANGE POWERS PARTY "What a golden age/what a time of right and reason ...." After this week's election, we don't exactly feel that's what we're in, but if Stephin Merritt says it's so, then we guess there's something to it. That's what he says in that Magnetic Fields song, "Strange Powers," the song for which the film is named. That's right: The film that premiered here during South by Southwest makes its way back to Austin at the Alamo Ritz this week, Sunday and Monday, Nov. 7-8, and then again on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The film has a pretty deep Austin pedigree. Aside from featuring Texas herself, as well as a cameo from our own Managing Editor Cindy Widner, the film's director, Kerthy Fix, studied at UT and served time here as a pivotal personality in the performance art/film/music scenes, most noted for her hijinks and founding role in the mid-Nineties Austin crew Performance Art Church (PeACh). Full disclosure: She's a personal friend of the Gay Place, as is Stephin Merritt-bodyguard and Magnetic Fielder Claudia Gonson. So it is with added pleasure that we invite you to our Strange Powers Pre-Party at Cheer Up Charlie's this Sunday, 'round dinnertime. We'll have giveaways, the Fagnetic Fields tribute band, and more. (See Sunday.)

LIPSTICK TRACES We missed the soft opening party for new lez bar Lipstick24 this past weekend. We did get a chance to drop by after the Texas Tribune's one-year anniversary and election night watch party (not so much a party as massacre) at the breathtaking new Arthouse. Lipstick24 owner Dorothy Reed has already begun the rethink of the old Creekside space on East Seventh and has a slew of ideas she and her crew will be implementing before the grand opening in early December. Keep your eyes peeled for details on this, and look for our interview with Reed later this month on the Gay Place blog.

The Gay Place loves you; keep those cards and letters comin’.
