What is it about the Ghey and the Great White Way?

THE GREAT WHITE GAY Nope, this week's Gay Place special comment isn't about Qua-curious sharks or a light in the loafers KKK, but about musical theatre's hold on teh Ghey. What is it about gays and musicals? We have no answers within. But, perhaps some clues: Why, this week alone, there are three events in gay Austin that deliver as sweetly as any cakewalk finale, and they are all related somehow to musical theatre (yet not one is related to Zach's call to reserve Rent tickets, though you can, you know). First on our radar is Saffire Trinity Stone Hilton Todd Fisher Burton Murray O'Hare and her new show at Jo's on Second, Musical Tuesdays. This first installation decimates, umm, deifies Hairspray!, which we still associate with Ricki Lake, not that cute li'l Disney actress. (Note to Nikki Blonsky: Stick with Disney, kid, and you will always get the fat roles – even after you've lost weight. Sigh.) We have no idea what ST has up her frilly little chiffon sleeve, so you're on your own, but we bet it will be sassy. Then there's the freakin' Glee-along at the Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz. We can handle – nay, crave! – endless vats of Jane Lynch, but as much as we like the show in theory, it pulls a few too many painful high school triggers for us to get too invested. Shudder! We weren't in anything quite so faggy as glee club, per se, but chorus was close enough for discomfort. Then for those of you who prefer to inflict your very own trip across the footlights-fantastic onto real living, breathing audiences, check out both interactive listings for Kings N Things. Tonight is Dragaoke at United States Art Authority, plus our fave foppy facial-hair freakish ones are taking submissions for skits for their upcoming Drag Kings: The Musical. So if submitting to drag kings is your thing, have at it. (See Tuesday, Thursday, and Ongoing.)
